Mikumi

Mikumi National Park

A hidden gem of Tanzania's Southern Circuit, Mikumi National Park shares an important ecosystem with the Selous Game Reserve, making it a special destination for wildlife enthusiasts. Covering over 3,230 km², its open savannahs are dotted with elephants, zebras, kudu, sable antelope, baboons, and much more. The park is also a birdwatcher's haven, with more than 400 recorded species.

A safari to Mikumi with Taswira Africa Safaris is often combined with Ruaha National Park or Nyerere (Selous) National Park, creating an authentic and less-crowded safari experience in Tanzania's wild south.

Special Interest

Mikumi's vast Mkata Floodplain is often compared to the Serengeti in miniature, offering wide open views and abundant wildlife sightings. This is one of the best places to spot large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, and elephants, alongside predators like lions that patrol the plains. The park's accessibility also makes it ideal for short safaris from Dar es Salaam, providing a true wilderness experience without long travel times.

Where to Stay

Accommodation options around Mikumi range from simple camps to comfortable lodges. Mikumi Safari Lodge offers a classic bush experience with views across the plains, while Vuma Hills Tented Camp provides a cozy tented stay nestled on the slopes of the Mkata Hills. For a more budget-friendly choice, Tan-Swiss Lodge just outside the park is a popular option with good facilities and easy access.
