Lake Manyara
Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara National Park takes its name from the shallow alkaline lake at its heart, a haven for both plant life and birdlife. The park is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, with over 300 recorded species, including cormorants, pelicans, storks, and vast flocks of flamingos that turn the shoreline pink.
Beyond its birdlife, Lake Manyara is famous for its rich wildlife diversity. You'll encounter elephants, giraffes, and tree-climbing lions, as well as the largest population of baboons found in any African park. Despite its relatively small size, the park offers a compact safari experience with an incredible variety of habitats and animals.
For the more adventurous, Lake Manyara also offers canoe safaris across the lake (seasonal) and bicycle tours from the nearby village of Mto wa Mbu, giving you a unique perspective of this stunning environment.

Special Interest
One of the most unique highlights of Lake Manyara National Park is its population of tree-climbing lions. While lions are typically seen resting on the ground, in Manyara you may spot them lounging on the branches of acacia and mahogany trees.
Researchers suggest this rare behavior may be due to the park's tropical forest environment, where climbing trees provides lions with a vantage point to spot prey, escape from insects like tsetse flies, or simply enjoy the cool breeze in the shade.
This phenomenon is not commonly seen in most African parks, making Lake Manyara one of the few places in the world where you can witness this unusual and unforgettable sight.
