Ruaha National Park
Ruaha National Park is the largest in Tanzania, covering an impressive 20,226 square kilometres. It takes its name from the Great Ruaha River, which winds through the park and provides a vital lifeline for wildlife, making it a prime location for game viewing. The landscape here is striking, with ancient baobab trees, dramatic rocky escarpments and distant mountain ranges.
Once renowned for its vast elephant herds, Ruaha has faced severe poaching challenges in recent years, with populations falling from an estimated 20,000 to around 8,200. Even so, elephants remain a highlight of the park, alongside cheetahs, leopards, lions, giraffes and many other species.
Bird enthusiasts will also find Ruaha a paradise, as it is home to more than 530 bird species. Among them are the iconic African Fish Eagle, Black Kite, Great White Egret, Hooded Vulture, Marabou Stork and the Green Sandpiper.

Ruaha is often described as Tanzania's best-kept safari secret — a true paradise for naturalists. Unlike the busier northern circuit, this southern gem offers a much quieter and more intimate safari experience.
One of the park's unique highlights is the opportunity to enjoy a tranquil river boat safari along the Great Ruaha River. From the water, you can observe elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and countless bird species in their natural habitat, creating a perspective unlike any traditional game drive.
