Swahili food consists of simple foods that are packed with flavor. Plates often consists of a starch, protein, and vegetable.

Starches: Ugali (a stiff porrige, similar to polenta), rice, pilau (seasoned rice)

Protein: Meats (beef and chicken) that are either roasted or cooked in a flavorful sauce, beans, lentils

Fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables are very flavorful! You can expect local leafy greens “mboga za majani” (spinach, swiss chard, kale, sweet potato leaves) as well as other vegetables and fruits that you find at home: tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, brocoli, cauliflower, potatoes, mango, pineapple, guava, passion fruit, avocado, papaya, watermelon

Must Have Tanzanian Dishes:

1. Pilau

4. Nyama Choma

Translated as “grilled meat,” nyama choma is a barbecue-style dish featuring goat, beef, or chicken. It’s a communal favorite, often enjoyed with a cold drink and lively conversation.

5. Chapati

A soft, flaky flatbread with Indian origins, chapati is a versatile accompaniment you may find at all meals of the day.

You can often find sugarcane juice freshly pressed and upon request they can add ginger and lime to add a bite.

Directed translated to “tea”, Swahili chai often uses various spices such as cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, cardomom, and more to create a wonderful aromatic drink.
