The Great Migration is a continuous journey across the Serengeti ecosystem. Over two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move in a never-ending cycle. Every season offers a different chapter — from newborn calves on the southern plains to dramatic river crossings in the north.
Calving season
Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born on the short-grass plains of Ndutu and the southern Serengeti. Predators follow closely, creating some of the most intense wildlife viewing of the year.
Green season
The long rains transform the Serengeti into a lush green landscape. Herds begin their slow movement northwest while fewer visitors enjoy quieter camps and excellent value.
River crossings
The dry season peaks and the herds gather along the Grumeti and Mara rivers. Dramatic crossings, big cats on the hunt and classic safari atmosphere define these months.
Short rains
Brief afternoon showers refresh the plains. The herds start drifting south again while newborn gazelles appear and the landscape turns vibrant once more.
