Ol Doinyo Lengai — 3 Days / 2 Nights
Ol Doinyo Lengai — 3 Days / 2 Nights Overview
Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is an active volcano rising to approximately 2,962 metres above the Great Rift Valley near Lake Natron. The climb offers a very different experience from Kilimanjaro and Meru, with steep volcanic terrain, dramatic Rift Valley scenery, and a sunrise summit experience.
The climb is normally started around midnight or during the early hours of the morning to avoid the intense daytime heat and to give trekkers the opportunity to reach the summit around sunrise. The ascent is demanding and involves steep, loose volcanic terrain.
Tour Plan
Day 1: Arusha → Lake Natron
Depart Arusha early in the morning and drive toward the remote Lake Natron area, passing through Maasai landscapes and dramatic Great Rift Valley scenery.
After arriving at your accommodation, have lunch and rest in preparation for the overnight climb. Depending on your arrival time and itinerary, you may visit Lake Natron or hike to the Ngare Sero Waterfalls.
Enjoy an early dinner before resting for the night.
Overnight: Lake Natron
Day 2: Ol Doinyo Lengai Summit → Lake Natron
Wake around midnight for a light snack and prepare for the climb. Drive to the trailhead and begin the ascent under the night sky with your mountain guide.
Continue climbing through steep volcanic terrain toward the summit. The goal is to reach the upper slopes around sunrise, when the surrounding Lake Natron, Great Rift Valley, Ngorongoro Highlands, and distant mountains can be viewed from above, subject to weather conditions.
After spending time at the summit, begin the long descent back toward the base. Return to your accommodation for lunch, a shower, and rest.
Depending on timing and conditions, you may later enjoy a Lake Natron or flamingo experience.
Overnight: Lake Natron
Day 3: Lake Natron → Arusha
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast after the demanding summit day. If time permits, you can take a short nature or cultural experience around Lake Natron before beginning the journey back to Arusha.
Arrive in Arusha later in the day, marking the end of your Ol Doinyo Lengai adventure.
